Founder: Jameisha Prescod / Enterprise: You Look Okay To Me / Discipline: Film, TV & Media; Visual Arts; Literature, Journalism & media / Location: London
More about their enterprise:
Launched in 2016 as an online space for the chronic illness community, You Look Okay To Me is a disabled-led creative media company. Inspired by Jameisha’s own personal experience, Jameisha was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Lupus in 2014 while studying film production at university.
This made it incredibly difficult to keep up with their studies and immerse themselves in the film industry in the same way that their able bodied peers could. They set up You Look Okay To Me as a way to use the skills they gained in film and audio production to focus their artistic practice around the theme of illness.
Their work for You Look Okay To Me made them aware of a collective silence about invisible long-term conditions that needed to be addressed.
The company now consists of:
Online platform
An online space where founder, Jameisha, regularly produces video explainers that examine how disability, illness, culture and identity intersect. Since the project’s inception, the audience has grown to over 40,000 followers across all social platforms.
Consulting
You Look Okay To Me collaborates with brands, charities and organisations by helping them fine-tune their accessibility and inclusion strategy across creative content, adverts, and general operations.
Production Company
In 2022 a film and media production arm was launched. The company has since produced short films and digital art exploring themes of chronic illness, disability, health inequity and Black history.
Added to their work as a visual artist, Jameisha is also a writer and was included in a republishing of Virginia Woolf’s On Being Ill. Jameisha is currently an associate artist at Forma Arts & Media and a trustee for London Arts in Health Forum.
