Founder: Sophie Slater / Enterprise: Birdsong / Discipline: Fashion / Location: London
More about their enterprise:
Whilst working at women’s charities, founder Sophie saw how many older or migrant women have incredible sewing and making skills, but face huge barriers turning them into cash. She loved clothes, activism and the idea of making more women visible, so decided to build a fashion brand that was a social enterprise first and foremost. Also, at the heart of the brand was a commitment to environmental sustainability and an ambition to transform fashion helping their customers embrace sustainable living one thoughtful choice at a time.
So, starting life as a feminist brand making slogan tees hell-bent on paying women workers a fair wage, Birdsong grew to create a collection of original sustainable wardrobe staples to totally transform the wearer’s (out)look. They dreamed up designs in house, working with expert makers who face barriers to employment in the UK – from artists and printmakers to seamstresses and painters – and paying London living wage to bring their creations to life.
In 2022, Birdsong achieved B Corporation certification showcasing its commitment to transparency and accountability. Additionally, Birdsong received The Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development.
In 2024, Birdsong came out of a 6 month hiatus to introduce Birdsong Recycle, championing circularity to reduce environmental damage.
